I love my acanthus. Although for years, I only knew it by the name Bear’s Breeches. This week, I read an interesting theory about the origin of the name.

“A strange name, Halliwell quotes and an archive a verb to breech, meaning to flog or whip.”

Watts, D. C. (2007). Dictionary of plant lore.

I don’t think I would want one of these majestic flower spikes to be pulled up to flog me with. They are viciously spiky in places but more than that, they are too lovely to destroy.

Instead, you’ll just have to make do with thinking what else you might do if you catch me naked amongst the plants.

  1. If any of the insipid TV gardening shows want to boost their ratings, they know who to come to.

  2. Honey, you have created another beautiful composition. The smooth sensuous of a hint of breast contrasts nicely with the texture and colors of Nature’s garden surrounding you. I love your outdoor pictures.

  3. Perfect depth of field in this shot making your nipple the sexiest thing ever. The combination of colours from the flowers and your long hair is delightful too against the white flower and pale skin.
    Perfect!

  4. I always love these sorts of nature images. There is something so soft and primal about them, as if this was just the way we were meant to be. I love the colors in this photo.

  5. Ohh I have some of these too and they are lovely. I always assumed the name was because they kind of had the frilled edge to the leaves.
